Swimmer Siem de Zeeuw receives support from the Reggeborgh Foundation

Siem de Zeeuw can count on support from the Reggeborgh Foundation in the coming year. A first, as he is the first swimmer to be added to the Foundation’s Groene Appels program.

Last summer marked one of the most memorable moments of Siem de Zeeuw’s career. The talented swimmer was accepted into the Swimming Academy of the Dutch Swimming Federation (KNZB). “I truly never dared to dream of that. It’s one of the highlights I’ve experienced as a swimmer,” says the talent, who began and developed his career at OZ&PC in Oldenzaal.

It did mean, however, that De Zeeuw had to leave the familiar surroundings of Twente for the big city of Amsterdam. With living expenses coming out of his own pocket, the HAVO student began actively searching for sponsors. Thanks to a tip from his mother, he found his way to the Reggeborgh Foundation, which supports a range of talented athletes and para-athletes. He sent an email and was invited for a meeting in Rijssen. “I’m very happy with the support. It allows me to pay my rent and also cover costs for equipment such as swimsuits and swim caps.”

“I’ve already noticed a lot of progress over the past few months. I now train exclusively with very strong swimmers, and we push each other to a higher level.”

Since joining the Swimming Academy, De Zeeuw has been in the pool eight times a week, usually for two-hour training sessions. Only Sundays are reserved for rest. “I’ve already noticed a lot of progress over the past few months. I now train exclusively with very strong swimmers, and we push each other to a higher level,” says the Twente native, who hopes to qualify for the European Junior Championships (EJC) soon.

De Zeeuw specializes in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle. It’s no coincidence that Pieter van den Hoogenband has always been his idol. “Van den Hoogenband competed in the same events as I do, and he achieved everything I hope to achieve one day.” There’s no need to ask about his ultimate goal. “Olympic gold.” That much is clear.

“Siem knows exactly where he wants to go,” also noted Inge Wessels of the Reggeborgh Foundation. “He gives it his all every single day, which is crucial in this transition phase from junior level to the top. We’re proud to support him as a Groene Appel. And who knows—over the coming years, Siem may develop into a true specialist in the blue riband event.”
